SUPERSTITIONS IN TAIWAN TODAY

Superstitions

Nataliya_Byzova Nov 7, 2014
Hi Taiwanese students,
Thank you for the videos about superstitions. They are presented in a very creative way.
I guess in Ukraine we have a similar one about a number, but it is not a 4, it's a 13. As for me, I find this a 13 a lucky number)))
As for colours, I'm not sure which one brings good or bad luck.
I reckon my students, who return to school from the autumn holidays on Monday, will tell you about that and other superstitions in Ukraine.
Best wishes,
Ms Byzova

Hello!
Thank you for your comment!
I think this Ukainian superstition is really interesting. And I can understand it. Some of my friends and classmates always whistle in classrooms, and it is really noisy. XDD

Katia_Kovaliova Nov 16, 2014
Hi guys!
Glad to see you in a new video.
I hear about information in your video, but don't be sure, so thank you for confirming my data :)
And now I want to tell you some information about our superstitions.
1. Don't give anything over the threshold, not to quarrel: better- step on it, or go into the house.
2. Do not sit on the corner of the table, otherwise you don't get married.
3. At night it is not desirable to look in the mirror
4. 13-is not a very auspicious number
5. If a black cat ran across you the road , then expect trouble (but I do not believe it, because I love black cats)
There are a lot of superstition in Ukraine, and that's the most popular.
So I wait for your video, and hope, that this information was interesting for you .
Best wishes

Hi!
I really like your new videos, they are very interesting!
your video about red colour is really interesting! I want to tell you about our superstitions:
It's good luck to break a dish.
Do not return into the house once you've started on your way from it. But if you have to, then look into a mirror. Otherwise you'll have a bad journey.
Before entering a newly built house, send a cat in first to greet the house spirit.

Hello Students
Thank you for your video's. I had never heard the superstition about the number 4. That is interesting and I wonder how these superstitions get started. In our country it is good luck to find a four leaf clover.

All the best,

Hello! Here in America, we think that the number 13 is bad luck. A lot of hotels don't have a 13th floor. Also, in baseball in America, players don't shave their beards until they're out of the playoffs. For hockey players they do the same thing during their playoffs. Also hockey goalies have lots of superstitions that start about a week before.

We have traditions in America as well. For example, walking under a ladder, opening umbrellas indoors, seeing a black cat, spilling salt, stepping on cracks is considered bad luck. In most building there is not the floor 13. It is considered bad luck as well. For good luck we might knock on wood or throw salt over our shoulders if we spill the salt.

A couple of super stitions we have are if you open an umbrella inside, if you see a black cat, or if you walk under a latter you will have bad luck.

lstrohmeyer13 Nov 21, 2014
Hi! In our country when people say something suggesting bad fortune they might say "knock on wood" to reverse it. Also wood was used to be known to hold good fortune so by knocking on it you were supposedly knocking out the good fortune to cancel out the bad. We also will never walk under a ladder and if you break a mirror misfortune will follow you for seven deadly years.

Dmckean1 Nov 21, 2014
Hi! Here in America in we believe that if you say something like "nothing bad will happen" then something bad will happen. That's called a jinx. But if you knock on wood you can reverse the jinx.

Don't must country defined 13 an unlucky number?
Taiwan have another superstition about number. We think that the number 6 is a lucky number.

Angela_Fuh Dec 1, 2014
Hello everyone! Thank you for all those comments. We also think that opening an umbrella indoors will have bad luck. It was surprising for me to know that sitting at the corner of a table will bring bad luck about marriage. I thought jinx was for people who said the same word at a same time. It's also for bad luck, too?

Vega_Huang Dec 1, 2014
Hi! I come from Kaohsiung. I believe say "nothing bad will happen" and bad thing will happen. And it usually happens when I have tests.
But I don't believe that if you see a black cat, you will have bad luck. Because I love black cats. They are cute~
In Taiwan, if you stick the chopsticks on the bowl of rice, you will bring bad luck to your home.

Sam_Sie01 Dec 1, 2014
Hi!! The other superstition is that we can't take umbrella into the place we live. It means the ghost will follow you into your home.

To Sonya:
About the superstition you said that breaking a dish can bring good luck, actually we have simillar superstition in Taiwan in the Chinese New Year. If someone breaks a dish in the Chinese Year, we will say "歲歲平安" to the person because the word for broken sounds similar to the word 歲. We believe that we'll be safe by doing so.

Hi!
Thanks for sharing your country's superstitions.
I think it is very interesting to learn about that if you say something like "nothing bad will happen" then something bad will happen in the USA.
In Taiwan, 13 is not a symbol of bad luck, but 4 is.
We also think that it is not good to open a umbrella inside the house.

Wow it's cool that the players don't shave their beard during their playoff, won't they get super furry???? Thanks for explaining "jinx" 'cause i was wondering what it meant when i heard "love is an open door". Interesting haha. Can i ask something? When i was little teachers told us that if you stick up your middle finger bad luck will follow you seventy years?? is that true? I believed that it was true so i've never did that until...i don't know...until the day i realized maybe it doesn't matter.

Hello!
We also have other superstitions. We believe number 6 and 8 are lucky, and we like everything with them. But I don't think our superstitions are true. I don't believe those things.

Elaine_Guo Dec 1, 2014
In our country, if you break a dish or a bowl, you need to said 碎碎平安. 碎equal break. 碎碎平安 sounds similar like 歲歲平安, 歲歲平安 means "be safe every year".

Haley_He Dec 1, 2014
If you don't shave your beards before the game, what do you do with them, like ... do you style it or,, put it in to a ponytail or something??? or else won't the beard be super messy??? Just kidding... I know they just leave it there haha

I don't think there are many superstitions in my country. It's interesting that four and death are the same, like if a little kid says they're four does it also mean they are death. I also would've thought that writing someone's name in red would've been like wishing them good luck not a curse.

Our Country--Taiwan

Jkeller01 Oct 20, 2014
We watched your October video and we found it very interesting. We did not know that there was a Taiwan Strait or a Bashi Channel. Is Taiwan a very modern country? Do you live near the sea?

Hi, friends,
Taiwan is a modern country though we are very small. Take my city Kaohsiung for example, we have the MRT system and the international airport. Yes, we live near the sea. It takes only 30 mintues to the beach from my school. Now we are making new videos about interesting topics of our culture. Coming soon!

Jasmine_Yan Oct 27, 2014
Hi, friends,
We have a lot of tradtional festival in Taiwan, like lantern festival, Tomb swipping day, dragon festival, ghost festival, double tenth festival and my favorite one-Chinese New Year! We have some customs during the Chinses New Year, like we will tidy up our houses before this holiday, we believe we can keep bad luck away all year around by doing so.

Dear students from Kaohsiung Municipal Jhengsing Junior High School,

I'm very glad that the Taiwanese Channel 2 has been launched today thanks to your first video programme about eggs.

Even for me, a teacher, it was a surprise to know about century eggs. I have never heard about them before. So, after watching your programme I searched the Internet for more information.

My students will post their comments soon.

Enjoy your time on Wiki TV.

Best wishes,

Hello!
It is nice to see you here, welcome to our Wiki family!)
Your video confused me, in a good way of course. I never even thought about such ways of preparing eggs. It sounds tasty and I am really interested in trying out new things. So you guys gave me new ideas, I may try to make this myself and feed my family with it) Also eggs are one of my favourite products for breakfast because they are nutritious and contain lots of important stuff. I don't think that we have any unusual ways to cook this product.

Hi!
Thank for presentation. I thought it was was vey interesting that you guys have eggs dishes. Here in my country (USA) we don't have any especial egg dishes. Jennifer Colorado,USA

Eric01_Yang Oct 27, 2014
Hi! I'm Eric. In Taiwan, we have many kinds of eggs. Such as century eggs, salty eggs, and ordinary eggs. We use these three kinds of eggs to make three color eggs. They play an important part in our food culture. It's common to see these food in Taiwan. If you have never tried it before, you must tried them if you come to our country.

Jojo01_Huang Oct 27, 2014
Hello!

I like to eat another egg dish: iron eggs. It's also delicious but a little hard.

Sharon_Kuo Oct 27, 2014
In fact, we also have special eggs like iron eggs or salted-duck eggs. They are both very common in Taiwan.

Jasmine_Yan Oct 27, 2014
Hi, I am Jasmine. Tea eggs and century eggs are popular in Taiwan, but they are just small part of Taiwanese snacks!

Elaine_Guo Oct 27, 2014
We have many egg dishes in Taiwan, for example, iron eggs, fried eggs with onion or tomato.

Haley_He Oct 27, 2014
Hi ! I'm happy you like our video! To speak of the truth, not many people have the guts to eat this egg dish, I think it's because of the look, and it smells really…Special. We eat eggs in many different ways, though I like tea eggs the best.

Joyce01_Li Oct 27, 2014
Hi! I'm Joyce. Many foriegners are scared at the taste of the century egg, but I think that it tastes good. Maybe someday you visit Taiwan, You can try it.

Milly_Tsai Dec 1, 2014
